    If you have Chrome: get Tampermonkey to use it! Greasemonkey for Firefox, and I'm unsure about other browsers.

    What would a modern iteration of a "petsite" look like? What would it need to succeed? Is it even possible?

    Hello /neopets ! So with the upcoming death of flash and all I've been somewhat on a internet nostalgia binge.. of course that means I made a fresh Neopets account to poke around with.

    Neopets was the most important piece of media in my little tween world and it will always hold a special place in my heart. That mix of game, social network, creative sandbox -- I created characters, wrote stories and drew art of them, made friends, learned HTML and CSS of all things..! There's so much to do, the freedom to come up with your own goals and pursue them.

    But it is dated. Extremely dated. Who plays browser-based games anymore other than people nostalgic for browser-based games? A dying genre.

    It's disappointing that the petsite concept hasn't been improved upon or reimagined in 20 years. There's been other petsites, sure, but they mostly just feel like knockoffs trying (and failing) to be a fraction of what Neopets was, not doing anything better or different. As far as I know, Flight Rising is the closest thing to a successor, however.. I confess I lost interest pretty much immediately at it being 500% dragons and just dragons. (I also have zero interest in breeding mechanics that leaves you with pages full of unnamed dragons you couldn't care less about. As archaic as some of the restrictions of Neopets feel, I think they're important to make each pet feel like a unique individual.. excluding the NC trading economy that popped up in these more recent years.)

    Err.. tangent aside, the things limiting "petsites":

    - casual gaming (and the web in general) has largely shifted to a mobile platform, this is easily the single biggest thing that Neopets dropped the ball on
    - social media has become extremely centralized, rarely do people idly play these slow-paced games and socialize within them -- they have Discords, they have twitters, etc. corners of the internet with bustling forums where friendships are made are largely a thing of the past
    - the amount of free and paid content to compete with now is endless, fads fly by fast (anyone remember Fall Guys being all over the internet for what, a week?) and the new thing is always right around the corner
    - the "Virtual Pet" concept was a massive fad in the later 1990's/early 2000's in ways beyond Neopets (pokemon, digimon, tamagotchis, furbies, webkinz, club penguin, on and on.) It was the right thing at the right time, and anything new it is not and never will be novel and exciting in the ways that it once was

    But along the same lines:

    - mobile has made casual gaming more accessible than ever, if people are willing to spend any number of minutes poking at any number of mediocre mobile games, surely minigames that contribute to an overarching goal would have some level of appeal, things like "dailies" are far from a foreign concept
    - however you feel about it, FTP with ads/premium/gambling/etc. has become a successful and standard business model, people are throwing money at "free" games now more than ever
    - there still definitely exists demand for this type of thing, as shown by the diehard fanbase and the number of mimics that still exhibit signs of activity. if you're familiar with furry artists and the "original species" adoptable community, people do drop some serious money on what is essentially an ownership tag

    So what would something that draws inspiration from Neopets need to have some sort of fighting chance at being the next big thing? To feel different enough to have an identity of it's own? What would make you throw money at it? What would make you want to introduce it to young family members? Or is the genre dead for a reason and nostalgia the only thing keeping it afloat..?

    Does TNT allow cosmetic browser extensions?

    I thought it would be cool to make a browser extension that replaces neopet images with UC versions of the pets for the user. (Could be their own pets only, or everyone's.) It wouldn't affect gameplay at all, just give a "classic" experience for those who prefer it.

    Does anyone know neo's rules about this sort of thing? I don't want to put in the work just to get a cease and desist and/or my account frozen.

    "You agree that you will not, under any circumstances: (a) in whole or in part, translate, reverse engineer, derive source code from, modify, disassemble, decompile or create derivative works based upon Neopets or any game contained therein; (b) use cheats, automation software, hacks, or any unauthorized third party software to modify Neopets, any activity or game within the Neopets or to change any designed game play; "

    Looks like distributing neo's images as part of the extension, and the fact that it modifies the site at all, are technically against the rules. But I know there's extensions with minor functionality changes like improved quick stock that TNT doesn't seem to mind, so maybe worth a shot?

    I think making it so that converted images still feature prominently would make it seem like less of a threat to NC profits.

    Edit: He just won 1 and now this will never end...

    My friend is now complaining that neocola tokens are expensive. Actual reason: Because he bought all the cheap ones......lol

    He also says he is going to try to buy like 25-50 a day depending on the prices keep in mind his account is about idk 10 days old lol which is all of his money generally. He also like to gamble irl soooo im not super surprised. The best part is he said I should make a reddit post for him so everyone does battledome. I said: sure I will help the community make money off of you. So yah if you got coins and they are reasonable im sure you see his name in your sales history. (Alot) Also...if he wins he will probably double down so yahhhhh this will only last a month if im lucky....
