| The late stage capitalism of Neopet trading Posted: 30 Dec 2019 10:48 AM PST Warning: this is going to be a very jumbled post lol I'm just throwing some thoughts out there. English is also not my first language so I apologize for my lack of eloquence I recently got back into Neopets after a 10-year or so hiatus and I'm generally having a lot of fun. Many things are the same, but many things have changed, too. I'm not opposed to change on principle, but there's one thing that's souring an otherwise amazing reunion with an important part of my childhood: neopet trading. I'll put it bluntly: I hate pet trading. Or at least its current form. I'm not against pet trading on principle, but the way it's being practiced in the game currently almost ruins the entire experience for me. People don't really care about their pets anymore. Obviously I don't expect people to care the same way we did back when we were children with wild imaginations, but people nowadays seem to treat their pets as a commodity, an expensive pair of Louboutins rather than a cute virtual companion that you can play with. I don't know. It's just... the way people talk about UC pets, trying to "upgrade" their "badly named" pets for "well named" ones... I get it, I also prefer my pets to have names without numbers or underscores. But people talk about taking rare names, not because they personally like them, but because they want to sit on them until they find an opportunity to use it as currency to get a "better" pet. And "better" really just means "rarer", and "rare" just means "UC". I get it. UC art (especially for certain colors) is full of personality, as opposed to the more streamlined art style that they use nowadays to make the customization system easier on the art team. I understand why people like UC royals or faeries more than converted ones. And I understand why people would like to have, say, an UC faerie Ixi over a converted one. What really weirds me out is the whole UC economy that users have created. People literally call their pets "trading fodder". Like... what. I'm not necessarily saying that talking like this makes you a bad person, or that you would treat a real pet the same way, but am I the only one who finds this just vaguely uncomfortable? Neopets has turned into a game of capitalism. Many people don't care about having an UC because it's cute, they care about it because it's rare and exclusive. Again, it's a pair of Louboutins. Otherwise, why would so many pound chatters be against UCs being re-released in some form (be it via a paintbrush, an item on the mall, a premium perk, whatever)? If you want an UC RG Kau because it's cute and you love the design, you don't care about other people also being able to have it (in fact, you'd probably be happy to see your favorite pet design more often!). But if you want an UC RG Kau because it's rare, you don't want more people to be able to have it, because then you can't show it off anymore. Idk. I know this post is a mess. All I really want to say is that all of this sucks, and it's really souring my coming back to the game. Neopets isn't about the world or the cute pets anymore, it's about owning an exclusive item that you can show off to other people. And again, I get it, we're all adults now, we can't see Neopets the way we saw it when we were kids. But surely there's a happy middle ground between childhood innocence and whatever the game has turned into? [link] [comments] | ||

Stamp collecting is the end game, lots of people are going to just use their stamps for their collection so there will be a small amount available in the future. If people come back to the game and weren't here for the Advent calendar they are going to want that stamp. I Don't suggest buying a ton, but put some disposable income into it. Ever wonder what it would be like to paint a Baby into a different basic color? Example: There is art of a Blue Baby Shoyru, when they are obviously Green. Now I wouldn't go as far as making a Baby Desert or Chocolate, that's too much. But some Baby's are a basic color anyway, just a lighter/pastel version.
