    As a desktop player: my thoughts on the new beta version of the site.

    Preface: I play neopets exclusively on Desktop. Even if there was a good version of the mobile site available, I rarely use my mobile phone outside of using it for phone calls and emails, and certainly wouldn't use it for neopets. That being said, I have taken some time on my desktop to explore the current beta version of the new site, before promptly returning to the current version of the site. There is potential, but certain things must change.

    Before I get started, you need to understand why I play Neopets. The reason I play is simple: the in-game economy. The vast majority of my activity on the site revolves around increasing the sweet, sweet daily interest button, with the ultimate goal of getting a gold stamp album trophy. When I am more heavily active on the site, I am sitting in shops restocking, auction sniping, pricing my shop, and checking the shop wizard, whereas things like customization are of a lower priority to me (I already have completed almost all of my customs, and I don't change outfits frequently, if ever). Thus, my priorities on the site may be different than yours, but it should give you an idea of what I care about and why I want things changed with this current version of the beta site.

    Efficiency: You should be able to get to important parts of the site with a single click.

    • Inventory: Should be its own button on the top, most important page on the site.

      • Sidenote: Clicking on your on-hand neopoints no longer links you to the inventory, but instead to the bank. If this change is going to be implemented, the inventory must be quickly accessible (one click away at all times).

    • Quickref page: you used to be able to click on your neopet, now it doesn't exist (?) (I understand the beta site is a work in progress). I use this page several times a day.

    • Currently the top menu buttons only link to a single page. It takes significantly more effort to navigate the site than on the current version. I would be okay if they kept the hover dropdown menus that appear to quickly navigate areas of the site, or if there were a similarly efficient single-click system to get around the site.

      • Of these dropdown options, I frequently use: my inventory (redundant though, I know), the shop wizard, auctions, neomail, the battledome, the bank, and the trading post. I also infrequently visit the neoboards, the pound, and my preferences, but I practically never used any of the other dropdown options. I don't know about the rest of you, but maybe this would be a good time to reduce some clutter on the header.
      • I don't want to have to use 3rd party sites to have to navigate to these important places in addition to how I use them to get to my dailies and npc shops.

    • In a similar complaint to many other users, the left side-bar must remain. What is the point of a virtual pet site if you can't see your active pet unless you're on its profile? As it is now, having it hidden behind a click and then being unable to interact with the page you are on while viewing the sidebar, is unacceptable.

      • In a similar vein, having the NST being hidden on this sidebar is frustrating. It should be viewable at all times, as it currently is on the current version of the site.

    • I dislike the order of options on the sidebar navigation menu. They've put in the top three spots: My Pets, Create a Pet, and Adopt a Pet. How frequently are you going to use these? At most, once a day, and that's someone who is abandoning a pet every single day and then adopting a new one. Sure, it's good for new users to have easy access to getting new pets, but then once they've made their pets, they're in the same boat as everyone else. The most important pages on the site should take precedence: something like Inventory, SDB, Bank, Shop Wizard, Trading post, Auctions, Neomail.

    • The bookmark function: On the beta site, there is now the option to bookmark and favourite certain pages. I like that this creates a sort of dropdown menu where you can access the pages you want to be able to access in two clicks. I don't know how it will look when it's completed, but this could be a useful tool, kind of like personalizing your menu. Regardless, I believe things like the inventory and neomail should be pinned to the top bar.

    • Finally, one of the things most mentioned: The new aesthetic. I agree the site does look geared towards children, but I'm not opposed to it if the site themes can be implemented well. My favourite theme is the treasure keepers theme, and the art style isn't too dissimilar. I think it would be beneficial for the neopets team to have some sort of open conference to help determine what the general playerbase wants to see in terms of art direction, given a few sample options. I just don't want them alienating their playerbase, because I bet 90% of players, if not more, are at least 20 years of age. The problem is neopets is still considered a kids site, which is why we have so many issues with social interaction on the site.

      • The one thing I absolutely will not stand for are the giant header and footer bars that do not go away with scrolling. This is my worst pet peeve with websites. I don't want my page shrunk by 25% because of some bars that definitely don't need to be there. I even play with my zoom on the site at 67%, and it still annoys me to no end. I could maybe live with keeping just the header stagnant, but even that would be unfortunate.

    All that being said, the neopets team is never going to be able to please all its users with a huge site overhaul like this. I understand that. But I hope that the decision to use the mobile site for both mobile and desktop doesn't alienate players like me that exclusively use desktop, but instead that they take suggestions from the community to try to improve the site rather than patch something together to keep the site chugging along on once the switch to html5 happens.

    I recently started playing Neopets after an ~11 year hiatus just about a month ago. Over a decade ago my account was frozen and due to it being frozen for so long, all of my items were wiped from my account when TNT gave it back to me. But, what remained was my Neopets, which is what I'm happiest for. After getting back & playing & loving the game again, I am so appreciative of the awesome community that still gives this game life.
