    Hi all,

    This will be a lot of text and somewhat confusing but I will do a basic breakdown at the end. On mobile so it might not be cohesive with subscripts but hear me out.

    So an intro, I am an economist working with diversifying housing policy but I have been interested in the economics of Neopets since I was very young. I had an account since 2000. I don't think the model I am about to describe is perfect by any means so take it with a grain of salt but I think the neopets economy can provide valuable insight to tangible topics like inflation and fiscal policy. I have been banging my fists against the table and screaming into the abyss about this topic but not many people in my circle know about neopets and i just sound like a bumbling idiot going off to anyone who will listen about a children's game. So I decided to post this here. I would love to collaborate with other individuals who are interested in the same topics.

    I have seen people on here do amazing work with tracking and predicting trends in features such as Food Club and the stock market. I have done some of my own research on these but don't have access to enough data.

    I wanted to measure and interpret the effect of Trudy's surprise on the growing wealth disparity.

    The experiment consisted of:

    Identifying an item that has a fairly stable price, I chose Nerkmids since there are several of them and they are all of similar valuation and can be obtained at random. from the years of 2008-2019 I have gathered data, 1000 samples a year though I started in 2010 so I had to ballpark estimates from TP archived and JN databases for 2008-2009 prices. I also gathered data on wealth of neopians who could afford nerkmids (had them in their trades or shops), 1000 samples/y.

    Using STATA my variables were:

    Nrate : AVG. Annual Value in Nerkmids as a percentage of total liquid NP

    Trudy(t): a dummy variable that 1 at t > 2015 and 0 otherwise

    t: time period

    year: Variable year

    I will take neopian inflation as given at 2.31%

    One would expect a downward trend in Nrate because nerkmids maintained equilibrium in terms of how scarce they were and they don't have a tendency to accumulate, but wealth grew as more players got discouraged and quit leaving the more serious players to accumulate wealth. I adjusted for the advent calendar goodie bags containing nerkmids. In other words the fraction (Nerkvalue/GrossNP) gets smaller as users don't tend to keep their wealth in them.

    for those curious about the OLS, so far we have

    Nrate= β1+ β2Trudy(t) + γyear + u(t)

    ​

    with β2: average player wealth playing Trudy's for period t : eg, when t=4, the dummy= 4 x (2,400,000)

    β1: Total average wealth when Nrate=0

    γ: given inflation 2.31 (yes I am aware it is more but the point is that even with a small inflation rate, the coefficient on the time variable intensifies the result)

    u(t): error term (people not being truthful in surveys

    command STATA : reg Nrate Trudy if year >2015

    It is suggested with statistical significance that introduction of Trudy decreased the Nrate by more than 52% on average, basically tanking purchasing power.

    Adding the time series would make the Nrate fraction even smaller, demonstrating the decrease of purchasing power over the years.

    TLDR: the neopets economy just generates money from nothing benefiting the richest players who can gauge prices of rare items indefinitely , limiting purchasing power as any retired scarce item worth having. This is similar to what the economy is in real life.

    Basically the economy is fake , currency has no value, nothing really exists

    I adopt pets from the pound and zap them until they're looking cool, then put them back in the pound so they have a better chance of being adopted. The few that I've rehomed over the years have all ended up stuck on inactive accounts, so I thought I'd try a new strategy.

    I'm not promising anyone a pet, but if you comment with your dreamie I'll write them all down and if I ever end up making that zap I'll reach out to you on Reddit! This community seems so supportive and y'all treat your pets like royalty, and it would make me so happy to see my pound pets end up in a good home.

    I got the avatar semi-recently but have been using the super fast click method to get items to sell. I won the jackpot the other day too and today I ended up in the middle of the green round when I needed to give my finger a break. I saw it through and won the jackpot! And the multiplier! And apparently I'm #1 on the high score list!

    Stuck on my 6th pet!

    Everyone else is done or in progress.

    But I have an Electric Ogrin planned, and I have no idea what to name it, what customisation/story to give it, I'm just totally lost. I did consider using the Fancy Petpetpet Tights but no clue what you could do with those.

    My other pets are a tattoo artist, a Darigan sorcerer, a fruit enthusiast, a weatherwatcher and a gambler.

    I'd really appreciate any input at all.
