Toil and Trouble: Testing out the Order's 'Double Bubble' Boon with my stockpile of - almost - ONE THOUSAND (1000!) 'Kayla Potions'. Results (Pictures) and Data inside! *weewoo*

tl;dr: Double Bubble is a savagely underrated boon. Here's a super long write up that hopes to demonstrate why....
    ______________________________________________________________________________

    Introduction/Why are you doing this?!

A few weeks ago I saw someone ask on the Boards about whether or not Double Bubble was ever worth picking as a boon when/if the Order wins at the Obelisk. Quite a few users were quick to reply that it wasn't and that the refill rate for potions was dismal.

When I heard this - ever the contrarian - I went searching for data to support and/or refute this claim and had a hard time finding anything concrete. Being a regular at Kayla's Potion Shop, I was baffled that there wasn't any even any explicitly laid out information to find as to whether or not all of Kayla's Potions even 'counted' (every one I tested does) - and there certainly wasn't any data on the Boon's success 'rate' at refilling potions; most of what one would find is anecdotal evidence about people getting lucky with an unexpected double dip of their swanky morphing potion.

I decided to fill in the gap myself. I had a decent little pile of potions that I had been saving for my pet once his level was higher and figured I could gather some meaningful data for myself if I used a large sample size once the boon was active. That realization was weeks ago; and so during my time waiting for the boon to cycle through I ended up being able to grow my sample set tremendously - between restocking while 'working' from home, occasional Shop Wiz 'snipes' and a pretty substantial spending spree this morning once I found out the Order had won, I was able to pull together just shy of 1000 potions to test. The final number ended up being 975 - and if my pet's name didn't make him turn his nose up at 'Strength Serum' so vehemently (like, even when I translated them to French) I think I would have spent a little more, made up the difference and hit my initial goal; as it turned out I had some pretty nice 'round' numbers to test, so this morning - at peace with my efforts - I started drinking...

    Smaller Batches / Miscellaneous Stats

The first potions I had my pet drink were the ones I had 'small' numbers of. The bulk of the potions I would be testing increased Strength and Defence, so to get them out of the way - and to get an initial feel for what kind of impact Double Bubble would have - I used my Movement, HP and Level increasing potions first. I didn't keep a potion-by-potion 'score' but instead I kept track of overall success rate and cumulative stat gain, and of course, whether or not the potion got refilled. Let's get into to the data:

20 - Illusens Forest Essence (r95) - Out of 20 potions, I drank 11 working potions and 9 duds (55% success rate). In total, I gained 22 Movement points (2 per success) - for a total of 1.1 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 6 out of 20 (or 30%) of the potions refilled themselves.

40 - Energising Elixir (r93) - Out of 40 potions, I drank 14 working potions and 26 duds (35% success rate). In total, I gained 24 Endurance (HP) points (1.7 per success) - for a total of 0.6 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 8 out of 40 (or 20%) of the potions refilled themselves.

10 - Elixir of Levelling (r96) - Out of 10 potions, I drank 4 working potions and 6 duds (40% success rate). In total, I gained 4 Levels (1 per success) - for a total of 0.4 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 4 out of 10 (or 40%) of the potions refilled themselves.

I didn't include Potion of Doldrums or Meridellian Potion of Defence in this first picture because I thought I'd end up bunching them in with the Defence pots. Later, I separated potions by rarity and 'batch size' and those two wound up missing from screen shots.

At this point of the testing I was already being pleasantly surprised by how often Double Bubble was triggering. I was only 70 potions down, but I had already seen 18 potions refill themselves (about 26%) - which was far greater than the 'dismal' success rate cynical NeoBoarders had lead me to expect. I wasn't keeping track of whether or not Double Bubble was correlated to the potion being 'good' or not, but as I moved onto training Defence I tried to keep that question in mind.

10 - Potion of Doldrums (r96) - Out of 10 potions, I drank 7 working potions and 3 duds (70% success rate). In total, I gained 13 Defence points (1.86 per success) - for a total of 1.3 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 3 out of 10 (or 30%) of the potions refilled themselves.

20 - Meridellian Potion of Defence (r95) - Out of 20 potions, I drank 11 working potions and 9 duds (55% success rate). In total, I gained 17 Defence points (1.55 per success) - for a total of 0.85 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 3 out of 20 (or 15%) of the potions refilled themselves.

After 100 potions tested, I had seen Double Bubble activate 24 times (24%). The nature of my testing had kept separate the high rarity potions from more common ones which allowed me to see if there was a correlation. My next (last) 'small' batch was a step down in rarity, giving me a chance to test that thinking.

50 - Mano Root Elixir (r89) - Out of 50 potions, I drank (only!) 9 working potions and 41 duds (18% success rate). In total, I gained 19 Defence points (2.1 per success) - for a total of 0.38 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 13 out of 50 (or 26%) of the potions refilled themselves.

I was surprised by how awfully Mano Root Elixir performed as far as boosting my stats, but in hindsight it made sense given the low rarity. In turn, this started to show that the lower rarity and the 'success' of each individual potion didn't seem to be affecting the Double Bubble Boon as the ratio of successful refilling seen so far was holding. The true 'litmus test' was going to be the 825 potions I had left to drink. It was looking like a good time for a pee break...

Mano Root's rarity was different than the other more numerous Defence boosters, so I wound up testing them alongside the other 'small batch' Defence boosters listed above.

Largest Sample Sets / Defence and Strength

Before I dive right into their results, one of the greatest frustrations when using batches of Bomberry Elixir is that they can 'explode' and deal your pet some damage. For the purpose of my testing (or... superstition?) I didn't let my pet's HP dip below 50% via a healthy stack of Dewberry Revivers I kept on hand (and Double Bubble kept them flowing!). I don't know if / think this has any impact, but it was something I did, so... yeah.

175 - Bomberry Elixir (r84) - Out of 175 potions, I drank 44 working potions and 131 duds (25% success rate). In total, I gained 44 Defence points (1 per success) - for a total of 0.25 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 53 out of 175 (or 30%) of the potions refilled themselves.

175 - Cooling Balm of the Warrior (r80) - Out of 175 potions, I drank (only!) 14 working potions and 161 duds (8% success rate). In total, I gained 22 Defence points (1.57 per success) - for a total of 0.125 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 40 out of 175 (or 23%) of the potions refilled themselves.

While I was pretty discouraged by my gains at this point (Kayla's defence potions are always pretty haphazard), what was proving rather consistent was the Double Bubble Boon. After finishing with defence - and now having more than tripled my sample so far - the percentage was holding up. At this point 130 potions had refilled out of 500 tested, or 26%. Demonstrably far from dismal - a fun word when you get to use it. It was time for Strength training, and I had started to suspect my numbers would keep up.

I had about 18 Strength Serum saved up - I was planning on buying the difference so that I could hit the more impressive benchmark of 1000 potions but after a few failed attempts at getting my pet to drink them (even translated!) I 'settled' on the 975 I had.

175 - Jar of Forest Earth (r83) - Out of 175 potions, I drank 45 working potions and 130 duds (26% success rate). In total, I gained 134 Strength points (2.98 per success) - for a total of 0.77 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 35 out of 175 (or 20%) of the potions refilled themselves.

150 - Bubbling Fungus (r81) - Out of 150 potions, I drank 101 potions that made my pet stronger and 49 that made my pet weaker (67% 'success' rate). In total, I gained 194 Strength points - for a total of 1.29 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 42 out of 150 (or 28%) of the potions refilled themselves.

150 - Essence of Drackonack (r85) - Out of 150 potions, I drank 29 working potions and 121 duds (19% success rate). In total, I gained 45 Defence points (1.55 per success) - for a total of 0.3 per potion overall. As far as Double Bubble was concerned, 46 out of 150 (or 31%) of the potions refilled themselves.

While I was again a bit let down by the effectiveness of the potions, it becomes much easier to shrug off a 'bad batch' of Bubbling Fungus - mine averaging about 0.6 less Strength per potion than typical - when I realize that a significant chunk of those potions have returned to my inventory. Ending up being able to use 192 potions (which the persisting boon would further increase) for the 'price' of 150 potions should not be underappreciated, and with this data in hand it makes it comical to me how quickly most users regard Double Bubble as being useless.

All in all, I will get to re-use (I kept them for next time) an astonishing 253 out of 975 potions tested, for a final percentage of 25.9%. This leads me to believe the Boon's intended 'programming' is meant to be about a 1 in 4 chance of refilling your potion.

I honestly think these leftovers speak for themselves.

    Conclusions

I titled this "Toil and Trouble" because it sounded clever, but truth be told I actually had a TON of fun working on this project. Collecting that many potions was arduous (and expensive!) to say the least but when it came time to test this morning - going in with low expectations for the Boon's efficacy - being quickly 'proven wrong' was the best feeling ever. Every time that extra box of text showed up after drinking a potion I kept being reminded (for the better) just how wrong I had been.

Going into this what was most important, for me, was obtaining more data. I expected to see maybe 1 in 10 potions to be returned - there wasn't much out there about this Boon and after reading the cynical opinions on the Boards I was almost discouraged to even try this - but I needed my own proof and I wanted to spoil my pet. Even with low expectations, in my eyes even a 1 in 10 chance would mean that large-volume expensive 'potion' training could be made a bit easier (and cost effective) with Double Bubble active - so it was worth figuring out.

Ultimately, I think the best way to explain just how impressed I was with the result is to demonstrate using neopoints (because we all love neopoints!). Imagine if you will being in a position to spend about 8M NP on potion training (there are dozens of us) - while I would have expected about 800k worth of potions to be returned the reality I discovered - where over 25% of potions tested got refilled - suggested the return would be closer to 2M 'worth' of returned potions - that, to me, is much more desirable (as someone training their pet) than fighting over Lucky Coin and Mipsy Stamps all week.

If you've made it this far, I appreciate you reading this post! I hope I have given you some insight into potions and Double Bubble, but - more generally - I hope I've inspired you (as I inspired myself) to test information yourself, run tests and gather your own data, because if this project showed me anything it's that just because someone is on the Neoboards doesn't mean they have any idea what they're talking about!

    *pop pop*

tl;dr - it's at the top! Double Bubble is actually pretty good!

    New player curious about Nerkmids

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:55 AM PST

Hello! I'm a relatively new player (used to have an old account 14 years ago or so, haven't logged on in ages and then started over rather recently, as in about a week and a half ago)

I've come across Nerkmids on the trading post and saw images here about them, but I've never really known much about them, how to obtain, what they're worth.

Is there someone who wouldn't mind spending a few minutes of their day to explain to a noob what their use is and how to obtain them?

    Thank you in advance!

What's your worst interaction on Neopets?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:10 AM PST

So it's been a longggggg while since I was last on Neo (been back for maybe 3-4 months, max?), and despite how long a user I'd been prior to my return (started in 1999!), I never really had too terrible interactions versus the occasional rude PCer or the rare nasty lurker who insults artworks in BC.

But turns out not all the bad folks are off Neo! (Incoming wall of text!)

    ------------

I've been on PC quite a bit this last month trying to finally get on my final dreamie goal of a UC Faerie Peophin (I only have a bn/dn T4 rn, so slowly getting there!), and been trying to slowly trade up the ladder. (It's painful, but for my dreamie, it's worth it!)

Cue this person, A. A has been looking for a pet that I own for a long while, and has offered on it prior. I'd rejected his offers before (since I've had that pet for ages and would prefer to keep vs trade unless I'm really out of options) and told him what I wanted, after which he gave me a condescending reply that I ignored and that was that.

Fast forward to today when A messaged me on a different account. I was mid work, browsed his reply (mostly lower tiers with one higher tier offer with a name I didn't click with), sent off a quick "nty not looking for lower tier" and went back to my stuff. Since that pet of mine tends to get regular NMs with underoffers, and I'd forgotten to state in my board that I wasn't looking for lower tiers and only put that pet as "tentative", I posted a grumpy sentence about forgetting to do so on my own board, and got back to work.

Did not expect A to post a bunch of paggro replies to his own board making false claims about how I always underoffer and was looking for super high tier offers for my pets. (Never once said or did this! And I try to be fair with my offers – I've never once NMed someone to offer a lower tier pet on theirs, even less if it's very well named!)

Since I don't like people making false accusations about my character and personality, I replied A's topic calling them out on that. A proceeded to throw a bunch of whataboutisms and ad hominem attacks my way for half an hour as I continued to defend myself, and after I posted proof, he blocked me and reported me. Classy.

So, guess I now have an official warning on my account. The first I've ever gotten since 1999! Woohoo! Do I get a trophy now or something? :D

    --------------

So r/neopets, what are some of your horror stories of interactions with not-so-nice Neopians?
