Results from playing 10 million (really) games of Tyranu Evavu

Results from playing 10 million (really) games of Tyranu Evavu

Ok, I simulated 10 million games of Tyranu Evavu, I didn't actually play them, but...same thing right??

    Introduction

In the famous Neopets game of Tyranu Evavu, a deck of cards in shuffled and turned over one at a time. With each card revealed, you make a guess: is the next card TYRANU (that's Tyrannian for "higher") or EVAVU (that's Tyrannian for "lower"). In this notebook we are going to simulate the game with several strategies to see how things turn out. Tyranu Evavu is based on the old casino game of High-Low, but with some key differences:

    • Tyranu Evavu is played with a full deck, while High-Low is normally played with just 8 cards.
    • In Tyranu Evavu, if the next card is the same as the current card, you are given a "freebie" to continue, while in High-Low this would be game over.

(Note: for the full gritty details of how I did this, you can check out this PDF. If you want to fiddle around yourself, you can download my Jupyter notebook!)

Outsmarting Uggsul: Strategies in Tyranu Evavu

I came up with four strategies to consider:

    https://preview.redd.it/nfu7k1ggo8051.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d0770405c238da4834c489a547ce5dc127c1bae

    1. Random Strategy: Perhaps the most basic possible strategy: just guess randomly.
    2. Naive Strategy: A static strategy where you guess based on the card value: whenever you see a 2 through 7, you guess TYRANU. Whenever you see a 9 through Ace, you guess EVAVU. When you see an 8, you randomly choose one.
    3. Card Counter Strategy: A dynamic strategy where you track of all the cards that have shown up, and always choose the guess that is statistically more likely based on the cards remaining in the deck. Ties are broken randomly.
    4. Galaxy Brain Strategy: Couldn't think of a more descriptive name 🤷‍♂️. Ever been frustrated when you get a 3, choose Tyranu, and then lose when the next card's a 2? Well this final strategy tries to be clever enough to predict that 2 every once in a while! In this strategy, we'll choose our guess randomly, but proportional to the probability of each guess being correct.

Avoiding "Uhhg Uuuuuuhhhhgggg!": Simulation and Results

I simulated games with these strategies 2,500,000 times each. I used a random seed to ensure I used the same 2,500,000 shuffled decks for each strategy so we can truly compare apples to apples.

Perhaps the simplest thing we can look at is how many decks each strategy performed the best on, compared to other strategies (if there's a tie, all tied strategies earn a point, so these bars sum to over 2,500,000):

    https://preview.redd.it/lwmnhh7ycb051.png?width=414&format=png&auto=webp&s=85fcb910a8bf93eb7978a4afdf8f41eaf920b81c

Pretty interesting! Naive and card counting are practically indistinguishable, while the other two do much worse. The problem with this graph is it tells you who wins the most, but not by how much. Here are the summary statistics to help with that:

    https://preview.redd.it/i0ozjma3db051.png?width=421&format=png&auto=webp&s=366193a5622e21f192454dc593a1e80188876ab1

These alone give us a pretty clear sense of how well these strategies perform! Let's check out the full distributions to see if there's any patterns:

    https://preview.redd.it/zokya3f4db051.png?width=347&format=png&auto=webp&s=a7b3a608b13d32d92338b20351d5f909d11f145c

We can see some interesting insights here. Both the naive and card counter strategies mustered perfect scores, though a score above 40 is exceptionally rare with any strategy. Beyond that, this table is a little hard to grasp and visualize. In order to compare the strategies head to head, let's make some percentage plots across the outcomes instead:

    https://preview.redd.it/ea97jps9db051.png?width=577&format=png&auto=webp&s=33b608f3c05a17934eec43233395c14a7ec8df38

Looking to the far left side of the graph, we can see that the Random and Galaxy Brain strategies perform rather poorly. Looking to the right half of the graph we see that Naive and Card Counter strategies perform very similarly all the way through the 30's, but if you want a really deep 40+ run you better count cards!

This actually aligns with intuition: when you've only taken a few cards out of a deck, the remaining deck still looks very similar to the starting deck, so the Naive and Card Counter strategies will make the same guesses very often, especially for non-8's. It's not until a lot of the cards have been removed that the Card Counter starts to come up with much different guesses, which is really the X-factor that can power you through the last 10 cards and make counting the whole time worth it.

    Conclusion

What's the takeaway for the player? If you have dreams of a perfect score (and I guess that 12,000 NP payout...which is less than you make from Trudy most days), you really should count cards. But if you're just playing for fun, for a few extra Neopoints, for the avatar, or even for a trophy, the trouble and effort of counting cards is not worth it and you can just follow the naive approach.

Based on these results, here are the estimated probabilities of getting specific score thresholds using the different strategies:

Score Random Naive Card Counter Galaxy Brain
    0 47.0% 21.7% 21.7% 28.7%
    6 or better (profit) 2.2% 19.2% 19.3% 11.5%
    15 or better (avatar) 0.0064% 1.53% 1.57% 0.438%

Do you have any other ideas for Neopets games or features that would lend themselves well to simulation? Let me know!

    Fountain Faerie Dip Giveaway

    Posted: 22 May 2020 11:54 AM PDT

    GIVEAWAY ENDED
Not sending any more cookies out either.
    This was fun. :)

Got it because I use faerie quest fortune cookies weekly. I already have all the pets I want, plus one for the lab ray, so I don't need this one. I have been just grabbing a pet from the pound, using dips I get to paint it, and putting it back. I've recently been informed that some people see those pets and paint them basic. :( So I figured I would start offering them up here when I get them!

Neopets has rules that I can only use a pet from the pound or create a new pet for someone else to dip at the fountain. I can not use a pet you currently have. So you would have to tell me the name of the pet to adopt or tell me the species/name of a new pet to create. My username is prin69. I'll dip your new pet for you and send you a faerie quest fortune cookie as well.

To win: what item in the 'gross food' category on neopets doesn't seem that gross to you that if real you would eat it? why?

i feel like i stopped playing neopets once i completed my gallery...

    Posted: 22 May 2020 04:39 AM PDT

i feel like once i completed my gallery (and won gallery of the week the same literal week), i stopped really playing neopets. no longer was i saving millions upon millions for one single item over and over. no goals. nothing to play for. i traded nc for a little bit, but then i realized i had customizations i really like for my pets, and i don't feel like changing them, so what's the point of trading nc anymore. i just spent a lot of money for items that are just going to sit in my closet, no matter how much i love them, because i love my pets customizations already. i tried to find something else to collect, but nothing else interests me, and i don't want to deal with the stress of saving millions or coming across items that are completely unattainable. w h a t h a p p e n e d

I think my account was hacked

    Posted: 22 May 2020 10:09 AM PDT

I recently got into my old account (had to reset the password). I was an obsessive player for around 9 years when I was a kid. I remember reaching a million np, getting my first paintbrush, and my first morphing potion. I had a huge and expensive plushie collection. I can't seem to find any of these things, and my bank account is at 0. Is there anyway I can see my trading history or something to figure out where everything went?
