    Using Tables

/u/diceroll123 speaking! I've made a simple userscript to turn your current bets into a formatted reddit table!

If you have Chrome: get Tampermonkey to use it! Greasemonkey for Firefox, and I'm unsure about other browsers.

Link for the userscript here: https://gist.github.com/diceroll123/04fb835539530038795e (Press the "Raw" button and it should ask you to add it to your collection of userscripts.)

You'll see a button under your current bets table, click that and copy/paste here.

shameless plug We've got a big fancy Food Club system in our Discord server, come check it out!

Can we talk about some of these choices from a business perspective? What's the end goal here?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:08 AM PST

I have a lot of opinions about this beta (are we still calling it beta?) and I'm just trying to understand why TNT/JS made some of the choices they did, so if you do too... let's talk about it? :'D

I'm a 28 year old who's been playing since I was like 10/11, I'm in no way an expert on anything- I just friggin love neopets and am trying to make sense of what's happening to it, so if I'm off base here, pleeeeease let me know!

I feel like a lot of us (myself included) are in the mindset of "why are they catering to children, there are only adults playing/paying" and it's making all of the design choices feel very wrong.

I work as a tech artist/sometimes dev at a well established but not huge company, that's owned by a much larger equity firm that owns dozens of other companies. From my experience, I'm seeing a lot of the same frustrations: (even though it's a very different industry lol) the parent company is disconnected from the thing they own, the higher ups at the smaller company are disconnected from the demographic and the people working on the products, so they start outsourcing to other companies to make apps, convert assets, or whatever else. The core team at the smaller company is frustrated, because they don't have a lot of resources (artists, devs, whoever else) are spread thin trying to support old systems or new initiatives that will inevitably fail while also doing our every day jobs, and a lot of the direction from up top just interrupts work those flows, or makes things even more difficult instead of helping push the product/site/whatever in a better direction as a cohesive team.

As an example, our artists in-house rely on a flash based tool to help make art for our more generic "choose from the following options" products. Basically a dress up game- choose options and it gives you an image. We've been warning the higher ups for a long time that flash is going to die, and we've even taken it upon ourselves to try to make new tools in updated 3D engines to do the same thing, but better and more modernized. Instead, they waited until late november of this year to outsource to a company to build us a custom browser so we can keep running this tool until a new one is in place. On top of all of the other things we're responsible for, we now also have to keep supporting this outdated system from an art perspective, with no end in sight.

At the same time, we've outsourced 2 other gimmicky apps to try to showcase our products, that the artists need to support- often, these die out within a year or two, or even before they launch, which just means wasted money from up top, and wasted time by us on the bottom supporting them with our art/3d models/etc (we absolutely have the skills in our own department to make better apps than what they outsourced). To me, this feels exactly like what's happening with ghoul catchers and L&L- apps no one wanted that the higher ups or even TNT's out of touch marketers decided were a good thing to sink money into, instead of supporting their core team in efforts to revamp the core site, and they ended up being a waste of money and dying after 1-2 years.

I can't understand why they didn't do things in this order:

    1. Convert flash elements to HTML5. From free things we use every day, like wheels and maps, to premium paid content like space faerie scratch cards and neocash.
    2. Once the HTML5 conversion is completed (or mostly- I understand the games room is an entirely separate beast) use those elements in a new, modernized, sleek and well-thought out UI that has a layout for mobile AND for desktop.

Instead, we have a mobile focused layout that most people are very dissatisfied with, that only works on a few pages, and has had important features removed (I shouldn't have to go off-site to find a link to my quick stock. Even in beta, there's no excuse for not designing core features into the initial page... imo it's alarming how out of touch this is)

Many of the pages they did convert, like inventory and the neoboards, didn't even use flash elements. I know the argument here is "well different teams!" but at the end of the day, if that's the case, the same company funded both of those teams. They should have used that money and those resources to work TOGETHER to create a cohesive experience. It's broken and janky. Moving between classic and beta is jarring.

There's no overall direction in this new layout. As a comparison, I found this last night, and I was blown away by it: http://www.neopets.com/~sketchpad#neoredesign

All they had to do was take some time to consider how players use the site, re-work the outdated systems into a sleek, modern, convenient interface, like this person did... I think what I'm trying to say is, why did they focus so much on re-branding visually? It's a game, mechanics are also important here- and now we're left with a blobby inventory with no quickstock, VS the user designed one that has a sleek, modern drag and drop system for item organization. Those little quality of life updates/modernizations seem like a no-brainer for any game these days, and they just... completely missed the mark with this redesign.

It's big, childish, overwhelming, and not functional. I understand the need to bring in new players- but this is where I'm struggling the most. Why is marketing not concerned about the current player base? Is it coming from the parent company wanting to just start over with the neopets IP, clear out the old and make it into a casual kids' game? Is TNT's own team really that out of touch with the current player base? (I think probably- was anyone else alarmed when gutterfoot said they had "21 years worth" of neocash items to convert?) From the beginning of the beta the feedback has been... not great, and I personally haven't seen them take any of it to heart.

I know the TV show is set to release in a year or so- is that the angle? Make the site look like a dated webkinz ripoff so that once the show premiers, the colors and big buttons reel in the kids? What happens to the adults who keep the site alive with premium and neocash in the meantime?

Another argument I've seen is "well they had a deadline tho" and I know that, which is why it's more frustrating. If they had started converting flash elements 3 years ago, it would've been more than finished by now. The fact that some of the new Stocking Stufftacular stuff STILL isn't showing up when I customize proves to me that they not only are way behind in converting things, but they don't even have a new system in place for going forward. Newly released items shouldn't need to be converted, it's doing double work for no reason. Why did they wait until the last minute to do this when (presumably) neocash money is the thing keeping the site alive? Why would they not prioritize converting their most lucrative feature?

This is rambly, but I just can't make sense of any of this. I don't have any faith that the site is going to last much longer- maybe it will be online, sure, but at the rate we're going, it's going to take another few years for things to be properly converted. I think maybe the most hardcore fans will hold out, maybe the ones who spend a ton on neocash and don't want to let it go. For me right now, playing neopets is just a bad experience made worse by the overwhelming feeling of "TNT/JS is out of touch, they're ignoring their user base, this isn't fun anymore and it's only getting worse". I'll always check in because there is a lot of nostalgia and memories tied to my accounts and pets, but frankly I'd rather be playing neopets classic- even with there being like, nothing to do yet, it FEELS like neopets and the community is a ton of fun. And if that dies too, I'll keep making plushies and drawing my pets and hanging out with other neopians online, because to me, that's what neopets is about... not this neocash heavy, failed app, forced mobile layout mess :(

TLDR; There are 21 years' worth of pages to convert to a new mobile layout, and choosing to do that at the same time as the flash conversion just leaves us with a half baked mess of a website with no clear direction for the future, and I can't understand what went (and continues to go) so wrong.

I've been playing Neopets since I was 12. Now I'm 32. The new layout makes me feel like quitting :(

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:02 AM PST

I have more than 50 items in my inventory right now. Last time when I feed my pet with omelette, I just have to the press F5 three times on the same pop-up window and it quickly finish up the task within less than 6 seconds. Right now with this beta version, it's slowing down the pace as it reloads the entire page every single action for the inventory process.

It's getting on my nerve... I don't think I have much patience for this 😂

Edit: I just used the new Shop Wizard... It was an absolute nightmare 😩

I know this is a popular topic atm.... but is ANYONE actually happy about the new site?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:54 PM PST

Like others, I'm strongly contemplating quitting but it's with such a heavy heart. I really wish their overhaul stayed more true to the original (or second version I guess) of Neopets. Anyways, I guess I'm just curious to know if anyone is actually happy or even fine with this (queue dog in burning house saying everything is fine).

To those quitting Neopets, where are y'all going???

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 05:33 AM PST

Are there other virtual pet sites that are just as fun? I've played Neopets for years in the winter months, leaning into its addictiveness to cancel out the unhealthier addictions that rear their ugly heads during seasonal depression time (coffee and Neopets is frankly just as satisfying as coffee and a cigarette on a dark bleak morning). I'm not jumping ship yet... but could someone throw me a map in case of emergency? Is there life after Neopets??

Is anyone else done with NC after all this?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 11:50 AM PST

What's the point of paying money for something that you won't be able to see? Heck, the new SS item doesn't even show up in my beta inventory, let alone the dozens of items I can't even customize with. Gutterfoot was kind enough to respond to it my gripes about it on the boards, and says that a lot of these things will be updated soon. But at this point, I don't know what "soon" means for Neopets. It's ridiculous that this is even happening. Not only did they have years to plan for flash, they went ahead and made the newest NC items in flash anyways? My trust is gone as a customer. I will probably try to get used to the beta, but Neopets is not my money ever again.

    Classic Menu Links For You

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:16 AM PST

For those who are lost in Beta (like me), I've organized the classic menu links on the top of my petpage:
    http://www.neopets.com/~ixiniva

And I formatted them to look as close to classic as I could get with my limited knowledge of html and css.

    Hope it helps!
